Our volunteers are inspirational

When writing articles about our Volunteer Service it can sometimes take a while to find the right words. However, when I found myself thinking about this year’s article, in celebration of the UK Volunteer Week - 1st to 7th June a word came into my mind - inspirational.

Our volunteers are busy people and yet they find time to give their skills and experience to those receiving our care in various ways.

Where would the hospice be without our fundraising event helpers assisting and cheering on the public, who have entered an event in order to raise money for us?

Where would we be without all the folk in our retail stores, looking after the stock, along with smiling, chatting and giving time to the public who spend their money with us?  It isn’t solely about the bargains.

How could we provide the direct care to those who come to us for specialist services, without the volunteer therapists, counsellors, receptionists and ward helpers assisting our staff teams daily?

And we cannot forget all the volunteers that are beavering away in the background because they are as crucial to the hospice as everyone else.

What inspires our volunteers to help us? I believe it is what the hospice stands for; something special in peoples’ lives when they need it most.

And, I continue to be inspired by our volunteers and all they do for us.

Thank you to our volunteers for giving their time, skills and experience to help others. You will never know just how many people you have helped, but I hope you will always know how appreciated you are.”
