Malgorzata Adil: My Experience at Saint Francis Hospice
Malgorzata Adil is in the third year of her Adult Nursing and Health Care Assistant course. She recently completed a placement at Saint Francis Hospice. Here Malgorzata shares her experience of being part of the care team on the ward.
I had the pleasure of being on a placement at Saint Francis Hospice. The support, understanding and kindness I received, allowed me to feel that I belonged to the team.
A few weeks before my placement, the education team got in touch to make sure I was prepared. I received all the important information and was given training at the Education Centre at the hospice before I went on to the ward.
During my time on the ward, I became more confident facing, what for many people is, the taboo topic of dying. It was wonderful to give people as much time as they needed.
The lovely sense of humour of the nurses and everyone on the ward, made me love the hospice more and have a better understanding of the value of humanity.
There is so much support for the people under our care, their families and staff too and I felt I was an important part of the professional community.
I got so much support from the medial team, as well as other teams such as the domestics, the kitchen staff and volunteers, who were all happy to answer any questions I had.
I felt everyone was looking out for everyone. It felt like being at home.
Now I’m a third year student at the end of my academic journey, I have found a place close to my heart. I now know the hospice is where I would like to complete my management place and that I’d like to specialise in palliative and end of life care.
On the one hand, there is the holistic approach, understanding, calmness, high standard of knowledge in the professional field and on the other hand, everyone is treated as an individual. They are never just a statistic.
I am so grateful for my placement at Saint Francis Hospice. I wish every nursing and medical student could explore and be part of the team at Saint Francis Hospice for a week.
