Nick West has run three of the six World Marathon Majors and raised over £7,500 for Saint Francis Hospice. Here Nick shares why he is so proud to be running in memory of his grandad and why he has no plans to stop supporting the charity that has been part of his life ever since he can remember.

I have always enjoyed running but if it wasn’t for Saint Francis Hospice, I may not have run one marathon, let alone three!

London Marathon

The London Marathon in April 2022 was so special. It was my first marathon, and the atmosphere was incredible. It was so emotional having the memory of my grandad with me and I had an euphoric moment passing the Saint Francis Hospice cheer station.

After the London Marathon, I knew I wanted to do another one. I was told it was tough to get a ballot place in the New York and Tokyo marathons, but I was lucky enough to get a place in both events.

New York Marathon

The New York Marathon in November 2023 was an amazing experience. You run through the five boroughs of New York, starting at Staten Island, then through Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx before ending in Central Park, Manhattan.  It was a difficult course as it was quite hilly, and it was dead quiet at mile 16 as no spectators were allowed on the Queensboro Bridge.

Tokyo Marathon

I was worried I had bitten off more than I could chew running the Tokyo Marathon on 3 March, but I was so excited and had a great race. I got to see a different culture and how the Japanese create an atmosphere that isn’t loud but still so supportive. Like the New York Marathon, I felt I got to see parts of the city you wouldn’t probably see as a tourist.

I am incredibly proud of what I have achieved and I am excited to keep going and see what’s next. I’d really love to complete the remaining three World Marathon Majors - the Berlin, Chicago and Boston Marathon and to continue my grandad’s legacy by running in his memory.

Hospice is an important part of my life

Saint Francis Hospice will always be an important part of my life and I am very aware of how many people in the community have a connection with the hospice. I hold a monthly raffle in The Harrow pub in Hornchurch and when people see the hospice logo, they are happy to support and tell me their story.
